Generative AI has democratized cybercrime. It has lowered the barrier to entry, allowing threat actors to generate flawless, persuasive, and hyper-localized text in seconds. As we move through the AI era, recognizing a phishing attempt is no longer about spotting typos—it’s about spotting manipulation.
Here is how the landscape has changed and how you can spot the fakes when the text looks perfect.
The New Trends: How AI Changed the Game
1. The Death of the Typo
Large Language Models (LLMs) allow attackers to write native-level English (or Spanish, French, or Japanese) instantly. They can adjust the tone to sound professional, urgent, or empathetic.
The Shift: We used to tell employees, "Look for bad grammar." Now, we must tell them, "Look for unexpected requests," because the email will read exactly like it came from your HR department.
2. Deepfake Vishing (Voice Phishing)
This is perhaps the most terrifying escalation. AI needs only a few seconds of a person's voice (often scraped from LinkedIn videos or podcasts) to clone it.
The Scenario: An employee in Finance receives a call. It sounds exactly like the CFO. The "CFO" claims they are in a meeting and need an urgent wire transfer to secure a vendor. The urgency + the familiar voice triggers immediate compliance.

The Deepfake Video Call: In early 2024, a multinational firm lost $25 million when an employee joined a video call with the CFO and several colleagues. Everyone on the call looked and sounded real—but everyone except the victim was an AI-generated deepfake video stream.
How to Spot the "Unspottable"
Since you can't rely on formatting errors anymore, you have to rely on Process and Intuition.
1. The "Out-of-Band" Verification
If you receive a request for money, data, or credentials—even if it comes from your boss's voice or email—verify it through a different channel.
Did the CEO text you? Call them on Teams.
